He was born in Simla, India, in the time of 1928. He belongs to a Kashmiri-Punjabi family. His family owned a carpet and also a military embroidery business in Ludhiana. He attended high school in Lahore. He studied Persian and also Arabic and philosophy. He also attended Mayo School of Arts. It was his art during the time of 1944-47 that was highly and much influenced by the late Bengal School style. He graduated in 1947. He also set up and created a commercial design studio. Then he started teaching at many of the schools and colleges in Lahore. He also attended the Slade School of Fine Art, London in the year 1956.
